Mathematics

Department of Mathematics is one of the oldest departments of The Institute of Science since its inception. The Department has been headed by eminent people like Dr. Masani, Professor Huzurbazar and Professor V. V. Rane. Currently, the Department of Mathematics is under the supervision of Professor Selby Jose.

The Department of Mathematics offers two postgraduate programs. In addition to the regular M.Sc. Mathematics program, the Department offers an interdisciplinary program, viz. M.Sc. Data Science. The enrolment capacity of both the programs is 40 students per batch.

A comprehensive curriculum revision was undertaken in 2019 for all programmes, to align them to industry standards and current trends. Therefore, the major task was to implement them with the appropriate teaching methods and techniques. These changes proved to be beneficial with some of the students being placed in different companies.

A landmark achievement was the successful launch of the new program of M.Sc. (Data Science) during the academic year 2021-2022. Realizing the growing demand of data science which has become one of the most popular applied mathematics field and adhering to our vision which is ‘to be premier Institute providing students with value added higher education in a dynamic environment where today’s students meet tomorrow’s opportunities’’, the department of mathematics took up the initiative to start this new course of Masters in Data Science.

In the area of research, the importance of producing good quality publication was enunciated and the faculty members were directed from time to time to achieve the same. The faculty members of the department were invited as resource persons and key note speakers for various webinars, conferences and Faculty Development Programs. An educational program, organized every year by the Department of Mathematics, The Institute of Science, Mumbai, on the occasion of National Mathematics Day, christened SIGMATICS, aims to promote Mathematics among school students. It is an outreach program to popularize mathematics among school students. This program is catalyzed and supported by National Council for Science and Technology and Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, Government of Maharashtra.

The department conducted NET/SET workshops to help students clear these teaching eligibility tests and excel in their teaching career and some of the students have successfully cleared these exams with the help of this initiative.

The Department also has a mini library with 600+ books, e-books and a dedicated reading room for the students to increase efficiency and knowledge.

The Department of Mathematics worked diligently to give its best to the institute and students. With the synergies of the students, faculty and the University we wish to move forward in this direction in a more focussed manner.
