Scientific formation

Gharda studied at Elphinstone College and the Royal Institute of Science before completing chemical-technology studies in Bombay. He continued advanced study in the United States and returned to India to teach at the University Department of Chemical Technology.

Research-led enterprise

He began Gharda Chemicals in 1964 and incorporated the company in 1967. He built in-house research teams to develop cost-effective routes for crop-protection chemicals, pigments, intermediates and engineering polymers.

Innovation and manufacturing

Gharda's teams developed import-substituting products for Indian agriculture and industry. Work on the high-performance polymer PEEK became a recognised example of taking laboratory research through process development to commercial production.

Philanthropic legacy

Through the Gharda Foundation and related institutions, he supported rural health, libraries, technical education and scientific research. His philosophy was to convert knowledge into products and wealth for the good of society.
