Born in rural Ahmednagar district, Somaiya entered commerce at a young age and built a major sugar business from 1939. His work in sugar, alcohol and related manufacturing established the economic base for a broader programme of philanthropy.
Education as public service
He began educational work in rural Maharashtra and created the Somaiya Trust in the 1950s. Somaiya Vidyavihar was founded in Mumbai in 1959 around the belief that modern professional education should remain connected to ethics, culture and service.
Rural and health initiatives
Somaiya established organisations supporting tribal education, agricultural extension and healthcare, including the Girivanvasi Pragati Mandal and medical trusts. His institutions sought to carry education and services beyond major cities.
Enduring legacy
The Somaiya institutions now span schools, colleges, professional education, research, healthcare and community programmes. His legacy rests on treating education as a long-term social responsibility.
